RETROMODERN DESIGN

This is selection of speculative house type designs exploring what may be called retromodernism, that we began a year ago and paused. It is a developing genre, looking both to the future and the past. The aesthetics convey a positive optimism as well as an affectionate nostalgia. Sharp, bold lines, brave colours and a spacious composition on plan and elevation, celebrating light and liberty. It looks back at how the past saw the future and reinvents it anew. It is not a pastiche but a reinvigorating of authentic art that, from about the 1980s, got smothered by a kind of bourgeois hankering after period style and faux Georgian hubris. In a sense, residential retromodernist architecture picks up from where the mid-20th century to 1970s left off. It attempts to build on it, using exciting new materials and innovations, higher standards of sustainable and zero-carbon design, and seeks to express a better, more up to date vision of how people live and inhabit their homes.
